How does your approach differ from other psychiatrists?
In addition to taking a detailed medical and psychiatric history, I also examine closely a patient's dietary and exercise history. I also rely on laboratory studies to assess hormone status, identifiy vitamin and mineral deficiencies, assess inflammation, and rule out chronic infectious disease. I also carefully review other medications my patients may take for the possibility of drug-drug interactions which may mask as psychiatric illness.
What is a typical session like?
The initial session typically involves a taking a comprehensive medical and psychiatric history. During this initial session, I also perform a mental and cognitive status exam, order lab studies, and discuss treatment options that include medications, supplements, exercise, and dietary interventions. By the end of the first session, patients have understand their working diagnosis and treatment plan.
How soon will I see results?
While every patient is unique, most report feeling better within the first two weeks of initiating treatment. Generally speaking, I find that patients who are willing to follow through with non-pharmaceutical interventions (diet, exercise, psychotherapy) do best.
How frequently do I need to be seen after the initial appointment?
We generally evaluate patients again one week after the initial evaluation to ensure that treatment is taking effect, review results of cognitive and lab tests, and review our initial diagnosis and treatment plan. Thereafter, patients are evaluated every 4-6 weeks until they are stabilized and have begun implementing other elements of the treatment plan, including psychotherapy. Once stabilized, we generally follow patients every 3 months
Do you accept insurance? How does insurance work?
To determine if you have mental health coverage, the first thing you should do is check with your insurance carrier. Check your coverage carefully and find the answers to the following questions:
- Do I have mental health benefits?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?
- How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network provider?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- Is approval required from my primary care physician?
Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are number of exceptions to this rule. Exceptions include:
-
Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
-
If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s. The therapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
-
If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without their permission in order to ensure their safety.
